Dinner Meeting at the Pier Hotel

Chair: President - Brian Tolhurst

Guest Speaker: Cliff Spencer from the Bureau of Meteorology, Esperance.
Cliff spoke about the future of the Esperance Met Office. Most regional offices are being automated and de-staffed 80%. Meekatharra in January 2017; Halls Creek, Broome and Port Hedland soon after.
Kalgoorlie is closing as from Wednesday 30 November and will be run remotely from Esperance. Esperance will eventually close in 2019/20.
Cliff has been here 25 years – then there were 5 staff and a 24hour roster. Now nominally 2 staff (one currently seconded to Cocos Is) M-F 9-5. Cliff will be ready to retire then but for a lot of regional Met staff in WA if will be a move to the city or a career change.
Newdegate now has a radar site using a new, more accurate doppler radar. Doodlakine and Wubin will have radar sites commissioned soon.
Esperance radar is now on Weather Watch all morning.
Most of the weather balloons now have GPS trackers.

From the Floor
Renae Poot reported from Dong Hua that she had a great time in Sydney. Dong Hua will be giving her presentation to the Club next Thursday, 1 Dec and then to the RCE on 5 Dec.
Renae asked if one or two members could also attend the RCE meeting as she (Renae) will be away. Several members showed interest.

Lee Mackin asked if the Club had heard from Elias who is on exchange under the RCEB banner.
No communication so far. Not very responsible.

Jim Gray spoke about public speaking (as part of Vocational’s year). He gave an entertaining talk, handling the hecklers well! His tips included: pick 4 or 5 people across the audience to ‘speak’ to; use voice dynamics; use hand gestures [polite ones. Ed]; use humour [clean. Ed]; have a beginning, a middle and an end.

Bucko told a soccer joke.

Fines Sergeant - Richard Moore
Joke – weather.
Frank M – Neighbour backed caravan into the dividing wall. Apparently, it’s possible Frank was helping with said reversing. The wall is now part of Frank’s garden.
Lee M – ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ has nothing on on Lee’s Adventure Camp nightmare. She dreamed she forgot to arrange food for the Camp then woke up hitting Paul to ring IGA at 3am for help!
Katie W – is not shouting everyone tonight as her old bank card expired and she had to hit up someone for a loan. .
Ian McC fined $10 or three push-ups for calling his daughter a cow.
Bob J – Left his car boot open out the front of the Pier. No wonder he can afford a BMW – apparently whilst attending Rotary you can have a self-service of white powder to the locals.
Heather J – her dress was impersonating Marilyn Monroe’s.
Shane R – No handover for Katie doing Sergeant Assist last week. And Shane reckoned she had big shoes to fill. And Shane thought his foot was infected but the Coke caught up with him and he had gout.
Ended with a joke with a farmer and chooks.

Buy the Box
Bucko – Richard M for multi-tasking – singing & texting.
Scottish – Richard M – using the gym.
Shane R – Katie W for being Sergeant’s Assist last week.
